If you’ve been working in Dynamics 365 Business Central for a while, you know that Dimensions are the lifeblood of your reporting. They allow you to slice your financial data by Department, Project, Region, or any other category you’ve created.
But there is a common nightmare for every Controller: Human Error. Imagine a user posts a Sales Invoice and tags it to the “Sales” Department but accidentally links it to an “Internal HR” Project. Your month-end reports are now a mess, and you have to spend hours cleaning up G/L entries.
The Solution? Dimension Combinations.
What are Dimension Combinations?
Think of Dimension Combinations as “Guardrails” for your data entry. It is a native Business Central feature that allows you to tell the system: “These two dimensions should never be used together.”
By setting up these rules, the system will actually block a user from posting a transaction if the dimensions don’t make sense together.
How to Set It Up (Simple & Effective)
You don’t need a developer for this. It is a simple matrix setup:
- Search for Dimension Combinations in the tell-me icon
- The Matrix: You will see a list of your dimensions on both the rows and columns.

- The Rules: Click on the intersection of two dimensions. You have two main choices:
- Blocked: These two dimensions can never be used on the same entry. (e.g., You cannot use “Customer Group” and “Business Group” together).
- Limited: You can get even more specific, allowing only certain values to work together.
Why This is a “Must-Have” for Finance Teams
- Clean Data at the Source: It is much easier to prevent an error than to fix one after it has been posted.
- Faster Month-End: When your dimensions are forced to be accurate, your Power BI and Financial Reports are ready to go immediately.
